What is a Doula?

The word Doula is an ancient Greek word for Woman-Servant. In our modern birthing culture it refers to a professionally trained woman who provides support to the laboring family. This support is often described as unconditional, emotional, physical, and informational support.

Why Hire a Doula?

The process of labor and birthing creates a vulnerable time in a couple’s relationship and the growth of the family. The support of a Doula can ease the transition with both emotional and physical comfort measures. The pressure is taken off the couple to remember everything and they can focus on each other and the task at hand. The Doula is there to answer questions, act as your advocate and create confidence. All members of the family are served by the Doula.

Birth is a transitional experience encompassing mind, body, and spirit. Calm assurance from a Doula allows a woman to build confidence in her body’s abilities. During pregnancy we are available to our clients to answer questions and discuss concerns. We can provide nurturing and practical information and help you clarify your desires about birth and newborn care. We will help you prepare by teaching you how to communicate your desires with your care providers. During labor and birth we will suggest and implement practical ways to cope with the challenges of labor and birth so the mother and family will feel more relaxed and in control. After labor and birth we are available to provide the continued emotional and informational support that can make the difference in your baby’s first weeks of life.

“Dear Nancy,
I can’t believe it has been a year since Sunny was born! You are an amazing Doula and teacher! There are no words to express how thankful I am to have met you. Keep empowering your students and Moms with hypnobirthing!

P.S. To all Moms out there who may have doubts. YOU CAN DO IT!” ~ Sei Greckel

At 7 months pregnant my husband and I realized we were not prepared for our birthing experience and had no idea what we were doing! On top of that, the way our insurance works is that we would show up at the hospital and whatever doctor was on call would deliver our baby–meaning we didn’t know who was going to deliver our precious baby girl! With only a handful of weeks left before our due date I ran into someone that was taking HypnoBirthing classes from Nancy and she told me Nancy was also a doula.  Within 24 hours my husband and I decided we needed the support of a doula and called and hired Nancy.  I have no doubt in my mind that Nancy was a blessing from above and truly saved our birthing experience! Over the next few weeks Nancy personally taught us the HypnoBirthing method, helped us write a birth plan, and equipped us with the tools to have a confident and fear-free child birth.  Before we met Nancy we had so many fears and anxieties about our birthing experience.  More than anything Nancy gave us the confidence we needed to have a controlled and pain-free birthing experience.  I can honestly say that without Nancy’s sweet temperament, supportive presence, and encouragement I would not have had a pain-free natural birth. We have a beautiful baby girl now that I can proudly say I gave birth to without any drugs and had an amazing birthing experience!” -Megan, Highlands Ranch, CO

“Nancy was very supportive and helpful especially with pushing.  Patient delivered naturally.”
– Dr. Hall, Swedish Hospital

“On April 14th, I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl naturally. I couldn’t have done this without the emotional and physical support of my doula and HypnoBirthing Instructor, Nancy. The birthing experience was phenomenal, we created just the kind of relaxing atmosphere that I had hoped for. She had asked me how I envisioned the birth happening and what I wanted her role to look like during a prenatal visit and the fact that she made me talk to her about it and say it in my own words gave me something more tangible to work towards.

Throughout the HypnoBirthing classes and our doula visits there was an underlying message that she maintained and that is; every birth is different, it’s about letting it unfold naturally and taking each moment as it comes and most importantly the mother’s only job is to relax, that’s it, nothing more and nothing less. She said it over and over in so many different ways that it was ingrained in me, by the time they told me I was in active labor I was so laid back that the nurse said the only way she could tell I had a contraction was because my toes curled.

Then her work really started, as I had family coming and going and being she was the most experienced person in the room she’s the only one I wanted touching me. My sister tried, but I fired her rather quickly and wanted Nancy by my side again. She worked tirelessly to keep me comfortable, helped me make decisions that I didn’t feel capable of processing on my own being that I was in labor, and was there for me no matter what I asked for. Truly, she was just an angel. She even stayed with me longer than usual post-partum, as my family had to rush to the airport to drop someone off, and made sure the baby and I and all of my belongings made it to the recovery room and we had everything we needed before she left. I knew she was tired and hungry, I was just so appreciative of all her help.

Nancy is a gem and anyone would be lucky to have her as their doula and teacher. Together we pulled off an extraordinary natural birthing experience that I will cherish for the rest of my life.   Nancy, thank you for absolutely everything.  I couldn’t have asked for a better birth experience, a better teacher and doula! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!” – Alma, Centennial, CO

Senja-color-web (2)“I wanted to have a birth as natural as possible with as little medication for the birth of our first child. With a family history of c-sections, big babies and epidurals,  my husband and I wanted to give our baby the least invasive start in life with the help of a doula and hypnobirthing.

With all my family in another country I wanted a doula by my side to give me guidance, comfort and to cheer me on. Nancy was there for both me and my husband all the way. She had a very calming and yet assuring way that gave us the confidence we needed to feel like “we can do this” as a team. And we did!

The power of the mind is an amazing thing. After 25 hours of labor (without an epidural or a c-section) our precious daughter Senja Helena Meakaliamalulani was born at a healthy 8.10 lbs and we could not be happier.

No words will ever be enough to thank you Nancy for being part of our little Senja’s birthing story. We are forever grateful to have found you and the Parker Pregnancy & Wellness Center!” ~ Maarit, Parker, CO

“Nancy was an amazing part of our entire pregnancy.  We really enjoyed the pre-natal appointments and her continued support.  Though our birthing experience didn’t go as 100% planned, Nancy was intergral in the successful and peaceful birth of our baby girl.” – Courtney, Denver, CO

“Excellent delivery support for a first time mom with large baby (9lbs 6oz).”
– Dr. Johnny Johnson, Rose Medical Center

Meredith (500x375)“Nancy, What an amazing birth experience, though unplanned – certainly not unprepared!  I am so thankful for you and the knowledge and confidence you instilled in Ryan and I, in preparation for the birth of our son.  Looking back, I wouldn’t have wanted it to happen any other way.  I believe God’s hands were covering Harold’s arrival into this world, and his timing was just perfect.  You were truly called to be a doula and I am so grateful to have had you share in our journey of bringing our first child into the world.  Please stay in touch and blessings in the beautiful work that you do with expecting mamas and families.” ~ Meredith, Denver, CO

“Throughout my pregnancy, I always had the fear of giving birth and as it got closer to the due date, my anxiety rose at the thought of having to actually do this.  I was terrified of dying, getting paralyzed by the epidural, and I was convinced that I just could not do it. It was recommended that I look into getting a doula to help assist me during labor.  As I looked into it, my boyfriend and I felt that it was going to be worth a shot because I was terrified of dying giving birth.  We met Nancy and immediately felt that there was something special about her.  She understood all of the fears I had and it immediately became her goal to help me overcome all of these fears I had of giving birth. Although we met Nancy only a few weeks before I went into labor, she came out to visit with us twice to teach us about labor and techniques to help ease the pain. We went over what I wanted in my birth plan and she made one up for me that had exactly what I wanted. Although I had gone through my entire pregnancy with the mindset that I was getting the epidural, I started to have second thoughts about it the last week. Something in my mind told me that I could get through it without the epidural and it seemed that it would be easier in the long run.

My due date came and that night I went into labor. Nancy quickly arrived to our home and stayed with us for five hours as we worked on the techniques that I found most helpful to distract and calm me.  Finally, I felt that it was time to go to the hospital.  At the hospital, Nancy kept telling me that I could do it and to just get through one more contraction.  As each contraction came, I felt that I could not do it, but she was there to encourage me to keep going, and I did. After eight hours of labor and pushing for only 15-20 minutes, I delivered a beautiful baby boy.

I had the perfect birth in my eyes and could not have asked for it to go any other way.  I owe a lot of this to Nancy for being there and for helping me find the courage and strength to get over the fears that I had and have a great birthing experience.  My family feels that we have a special connection with Nancy because after only knowing her for a few weeks, we were able to share this special time in our lives with her and are so grateful to have had her as our doula.  I would recommend Nancy to any of my friends who have a child in the future.  We will always keep in touch with her because we feel that she helped us in so many ways and has truly touched us. It makes me so proud to have given birth naturally because of the encouragement and knowledge Nancy shared with me.” - Laura, Arvada, CO

Cata and Jeff“Nancy, Thanks again for all your support. I also want to thank you so much for being with Cata while I was in the nursery with Alexa. That meant so much to me that she had your support during that somewhat dramatic moment and for that I’m forever greatful. You are a great teacher and doula and we’re really glad you were able to share in our experience. It’s because of you that Cata was able to have the birth she wanted so thanks for your positive nature and support. We’ll definitly keep in touch and let you know how things are going.” ~ Jeff, Lonetree, CO

Nancy, Thank you for being our doula, for helping us throughout labor, and teaching such an awesome and eye-opening HypnoBirthing class.  Talking with you and watching “Business of Being Born” documentary that you recommended really changed everything for us and we feel so lucky to have decided to do a homebirth and have everything go as well as it did.  We can’t thank you enough! Love, Kristyn, Chad and Kai

“We initially met Nancy as we took her Hypno Birthing class which instantly put us more at ease with the pregnancy and birthing process. The education was invaluable and Nancy has a calming nature that was a blessing to us. We decided to also ask Nancy to be the Doula at our baby’s birth. As we drew closer to our baby boy’s arrival, it was so pleasant getting to know Nancy a bit better during home visits She was thorough and even encouraged us to research another hospital that received good recommendations for their birthing unit. Due to Nancy’s recommendation, we changed our prenatal care at 32 weeks and planned to birth at the new hospital – this ended up being one of the best decisions we made. We are so thankful for Nancy’s wise and careful recommendation! When the day of the birth came, we called Nancy super early in the morning for advice and I was impressed with her calmness even when awakened out of sleep. Nancy met us at the hospital several hours later upon our request and the labor and delivery went smoothly because of Nancy’s recommendations and reassuring presence. We had a beautiful baby boy and I have no regrets regarding the delivery. We are very thankful for Nancy and all the skill and joy she brought to one of the most amazing experiences of our lives. Thank you Nancy!”
-Rebekah and Michael Quinlan

“Nancy, Matt and I appreciate all the support and information you gave us.  You were so helpful during our labor.  Our birth was wonderful!” - Rebecca, Parker, CO

“Nancy, Thanks so much for making Sara’s birth exactly how we had imagined it!  You were such a great help to me and definitely made the process easier.  we both think you are an excellent Doula and we can’t wait to recommend you to everyone we know.  I still can’t believe that I was able to have a natural birth and a huge part of that was because of you (and HypnoBirthing).  Thanks so much!” - Kelly, Golden, CO

“Nancy, What can I say?!  Thank you so much for being there on Zoey’s birthday and for helping to make her birth everything I hoped it would be!  I can truly say it is a joyous memory that brings tears to my eyes!” - Deanna, Aurora, CO

“Nancy, We can’t thank you enough for all you did for us in the delivery room.  I am convinced I would have agreed to many things that went against my birth plan had you not been there to encourage me to stick to my goals.  Shane, Colton and myself are truly blessed that you came into our lives for such a significant event!” - Cori, Parker, CO
